This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and for once I'm going to say "to heck it" and just take a risk. If I could find assembly instructions I could probably do it myself, but I've never been able to find any.
C96 MAUSER DISASSEMBLY INSTALL
Yeah, but what are those parts going to cost me later? And the cost of installing them, since I don't know a thing about the innards of a c96 I DO know that I install a part incorrectly, I'll have to drill a hole through the side to remove it again and reassemble it properly. So, do I buy it and hope I can find a gunsmith somewhere who can fix it, or pass on the deal? The overwhelming majority are so far out of my price range ($1,200 or more) that I likely won't be able to afford one for quite some time, and when I am finally able to afford one, I won't be able to justify the costs. I've wanted a Mauser ever since I was eight years old. It's either broken and stuck at the bottom of the magazine or missing entirely, which is what I suspect. It won't feed ammo, nor will it lock the bolt back on an empty chamber.

The major downside is, the magazine follower and spring are either broken or missing entirely, and I don't know enough about Mauser c96's to tell for certain either way. I didn't have a light with me to inspect it, but from what I could see in the bore the rifling appears to be very, very faint, almost gone. The hammer drops when I pull the trigger, the safety appears to function properly, and the firing pin seems intact. The grips are black plastic or bakelite and worn but serviceable. The Wafenfaubrik Mauser stamp is intact on the opposite side. It appears to have been refinished at some point, covering over some minor pitting in one spot on the left side. This, I thought, must be too good to be true. In an out-of-the-way pawn shop, I found a bolo Mauser c96 for $375.

So, first thing I did was hit all the gun shops in town. I got a refund check from my college today.
